Former UN Assistant Secretary General, heading the UN “oil-for-food” program until resignation in February 2000 in protest over the continued sanctions
“Mr Dennis Halliday, former UN Assistant Secretary General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, predecessor of Mr Hans von Sponeck, that the sanctions led to resign in protest in September 1998. He declared at that time: « We are destroying an entire society (…).This is illegal and immoral ». His resignation was followed by that of Mr Hans von Sponeck and two days later, by that of Mrs Jutta Burghardt, in charge of the UN Food Programme who joined the declaration of the two former.”
