Disparate
Jon Stewart has a series of short videos on Iranian elections. Somewhere he illustrates the influence of the “Obama effect” on Iranian elections: the use of slogans such as Yes We Can, Change and also the “Michelle Obama” effect, with an excerpt of a speech where Zahra Rahnavard says something like “this is the first time that I am proud of my country“!. Oops, it seems that this last part was a joke! I missed the sentence in Persian – Thanks P:)
You can browse the videos here, among others see Jason Jones: “behind the veil” – part 1 – 2 – 3.

One of my favorite quotes from PPGG’s homepage:
“Those who crusade, not for God in themselves, but against the devil in others, never succeed in making the world better, but leave it either as it was, or sometimes perceptibly worse than what it was, before the crusade began. By thinking primarily of evil we tend, however excellent our intentions, to create occasions for evil to manifest itself.”
Aldous Huxley
Maybe that is how we end up with a “We Won’t Negotiate” posture and consider protest as a “low-level terrorism“.
I love the quote on crusades… so profoundly true.
(knew about the Huxley dynasty of famous biologists but hadn’t realised they also had a writer borther!)
Cyrula, you can read online “Brave New World” by Huxley, just have to google it.
A classic.
Ha! And I did not know that Aldous Huxley had scientist brothers. Brave New World is still a radical book, all these years after its publication.
When the protests started right after the election, the strength of the movement was so tenacious that I had hope things could begin to change. Two weeks later and the government is pushing this movement further and further back through violence and it seems from what I’ve been able to read that the clamping down is working. That is really depressing.
Just thought I’d stop in and flash you a peace sign. 🙂
Great to see you Gina 🙂
I hope something positive will come out of all this.
The last in the series (Ayatolla told you so) actually made me cry.
That’s an interesting quote. If only I understood what is meant by ‘crusading for God in ourselves’ …
P.S. Love your site, which I just discovered via Pedestrian.
Hi Gene and thanks 🙂
I guess this means whatever is the opposite of the “devil in others”.
